How to Help Your Child Cope with a Cancer Diagnosis

Your Child Has Cancer. Now What?

Having your child diagnosed with cancer can be an overwhelming experience to say the least. You have questions and concerns and you’re scared for your child. You feel helpless and angry. Depending on the age of your child they’ll have questions and concerns.

Here are 4 Ways to Help a Child Cope with a Cancer Diagnosis:

1. Give them age appropriate information. Let them know what to expect from treatments and procedures in a way that they understand. It’ll help ease some of their fears.
2. Let them ask questions. This will help you as a parent gauge how much they understand about cancer.
3. Keep them in a normal routine. They’ll need a constant in their life. If they are healthy enough to play allow them to do so.
4. Consider purchasing a book from The American Cancer Society’s online bookstore. These books explain cancer from a child’s perspective.
