Chasing Away Childhood Cancer

Our Stories: Childhood Cancer from the Eyes of a Medical Professional

In the Radiation Oncology department, we have a golden bell that hangs on the wall near the exit of the unit. Those who finish radiation treatment take home a certificate signed by all of the therapists which we call a “diploma” and get to ring the bell as hard as they want! We were fortunate enough to have several bell ringers today. As these people pulled on that rope, smiles beaming, staff and loved ones surrounding them clapping, many thoughts crossed my mind. First and foremost, I thought about the relief that must come over the patient “graduating” even if only for a temporary time.

Cancer is a grueling struggle for children and adults alike. Each small milestone is extremely important. Positive attitudes, support and celebration can make all of the difference in the world. The bell was donated by a cancer survivor from years ago. Ringing this bell reminds all patients young and old that there is a light at the end of the tunnel; that we are researching and fighting and trying to find the cure.
